A new dog park and the town’s water project were subjects at Hagerstown council’s meeting on April 6. Park Board president Shaun Lieberman presented an ordinance draft for signage at the new park addition. The council adopted the ordinance in a 5-0 vote.
Town Manager Chris LaMar reported that the project to replace the town’s water line system is nearing completion with street repaving underway. LaMar will apply for a Community Crossing grant to fund more street and curb repairs. Plans to survey the water line with cameras are in motion.
During public comments, David Moore inquired about purchasing a North Perry lot near a home he plans to buy. Town attorney John Madison said he would review the sale process and provide the council details by the end of the week.
Madison gave an update on the railroad crossing repair dispute with Norfolk Southern Railway. A question of land ownership has yet to be settled. With the last correspondence in March, LaMar intends to contact Norfolk for further discussion.
Under department reports, the parks board elected officers and requested additional park electrical outlets for Hometown Christmas lighting. Police recorded fewer calls in March with 168, and approved a one-year school resource officer contract with Nettle Creek Schools.
The fire department had 27 calls last month, attended live burn training in Winchester, retrieved a truck from service and gained a new cadet while another relocated. They proposed an ordinance for service fees to match new state standards, and they requested more to be done about illegal trash burning.
The airport board had an arena tower removed and is planning its tree harvesting this summer. The advisory plan commission will update the city’s comprehensive plan ahead of the November 2027 deadline. The plan is updated every five years.
Council approved the sale of a bucket truck to Cambridge City, wage and salary increases for park employees and an electrical utility worker, a resident’s sewer credit, and invoices for Warner Engineering and Indiana Earthworks.
The next meeting is Monday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. at 49 E. College St. in Hagerstown. The public may attend.
