The Richmond baseball team traveled to Connersville on Wednesday, April 1, to open regular-season play against their longtime rival Spartans. The Spartans scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning, but they never scored again.

The Spartans never solved Richmond starter Zander Juday, who limited them to one hit, struck out seven and did not allow an earned run over five innings of work to pick up the win.

Red Devil offense stuck early, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead for good. Weston Jones delivered the key hit in the frame with a base-clearing triple.

Jones led Richmond offense with two hits and three runs batted in. Darwyn Roman was also credited with a run batted in and two stolen bases. Jay Burdette also stole two bases. Parker Flanigan collected the lone Spartan hit.

Malachi Moore pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Richmond to nail down the save. Brody Schearer took the loss for Connersville.
