Hagerstown’s Dave and Janice Schuette received the Good Friend and Neighbor Award at the 66th annual Rural Urban Dinner on July 16. The traditional gathering dates back to the 1950s, fostering relationships between rural and city residents.

Last year’s recipient, Randy Newman, had the honor of announcing the winner. Rather than read hints to the crowd, Newman welcomed the Schuettes to the front, describing why they deserved the award.

“We were totally surprised and shocked,” said Dave. He and his wife are aware of many others who give back to the community. He said they just try to do the same.

The Schuettes have lived in Hagerstown since 1969. Dave worked in the ag industry as a crop insurance supervisor, while Janice worked many years in insurance. They have two adult children, Gary and Luann.

The annual banquet is open to all Wayne County residents, to celebrate those making a positive impact on the community and greater county life.
