Wayne County 4-H Fair blends country and city residents together for a week of fun, food and optimism about the future.

Fairgoers can see students’ dedication and creativity in projects ranging from cake decoration to cattle.

It also includes fireworks, country music, Safari Sam and Oscar the Ostrich, puppets, rides, model trains, and track events.

The fair opens Saturday, June 21, and ends Saturday, June 28. Poor Jack Amusements will offer rides and games daily.

Fairgoers can check out 4-H and open class exhibits from noon to 8 p.m. daily through Thursday at First Bank Kuhlman Center.

Some 4-H events include the tractor operator’s contest and pet/cat show on Saturday; dog show, Sunday; rabbit, horse/pony and swine shows, Monday; poultry, goat, sheep, and horse/pony shows and Battle of Barns, Tuesday; goat, dairy beef, beef heifer, and showmanship and beef steer shows, Wednesday; dairy show, horse/pony fun and games, Thursday.

The Supreme Showman competition is at 6 p.m. Thursday and the livestock auction starts at 11 a.m. Friday. The sale returns to the traditional walking livestock auction format, where 4-H exhibitors walk their animals through the auction ring. The Sale of Champions is being replaced by a Senior Spotlight.

Two free country concerts are planned by Jim Burns (7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21) and Preston Cooper (7:30 p.m. Friday, June 27).

Four bluegrass/gospel acts — Born Again, Mark Poe & The All American Bluegrass Band, Cutter & Cash and the Kentucky Grass, and Daryl Mosley — take the free stage from 3-8 p.m. Sunday.

  • June 25: Steven’s Puppets, 11 a.m., 3, 5, 7 and 8:30 p.m.; rodeo, 7 p.m.
  • June 26: Kids’ day 1-5 p.m. $15 armband ride special; food specials; Silly Safaris, 5:30 and 7 p.m.; dirt drag racing, 7 p.m.
  • June 27: 4-H livestock auction, 11 a.m.; mud bog, 7 p.m.; country concert, 7:30 p.m.; fireworks, dark
  • June 28: Kicks 96 Idol finals, 5 p.m.; dirt drag racing, 7 p.m.
