The powerful Connersville track and field team won the sectional title for the fifth consecutive year Tuesday evening, May 16, while the other schools in the field fought to advance as many athletes as possible to the regional. Centerville finished third in the team standings, Hagerstown finished fourth, Northeastern finished fifth, Richmond tied for sixth, and Seton Catholic finished eighth. More importantly, each of the schools qualified multiple athletes to advance to the regional Tuesday, May 23, at Franklin Community HS.
There were also multiple blue-ribbon winners from the Wayne County schools.
Kasiti Ferriell (Hagerstown) won the 400-meter. Elizabeth Graham (Richmond) won the 800-meter, and Marissa Cates (Northeastern) won both the 1,600-meter and the 3,200-meter. Hattie Hobbs (Hagerstown) won the 100-meter hurdles. Lindsey Golliher (Hagerstown) won the long jump. Destinee Reece (Centerville) won the discus.
The Top 3 finishers in each event qualified to advance to the Regional.
Regional qualifiers by school
Centerville: Brooke Jordan (400-meter), Chloe Scales (3,200-meter), Kendra Shipman (300-meter hurdles), Cailin Ballenger (high jump), Tasha Jordan (long jump), Destinee Reece (shot put and discus), 4×400-meter relay team, 4×800-meter relay team.
Hagerstown: Kasiti Ferriell (400-meter), Hattie Hobbs (100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles), Lindsey Golliher (long jump), 4×100 meter relay team.
Northeastern: Akailyn Hogg (100-meter and 200-meter), Marissa Cates (1,600-meter and 3,200-meter), Addi Mastriano (shot put), 4×100 meter relay team.
Richmond: Elizabeth Graham (800-meter), Keena Barker (1,600-meter and 3,200-meter), 4×800-meter relay team.
Seton Catholic: Gwynie Falcone (800-meter), Bryn VanVleet (high jump), Josie Meeks (discus), 4×400 meter relay team.
Final team standings: Connersville 136, Rushville 107, Centerville 89, Hagerstown 69, Northeastern 60, Richmond 47, Union County 47, Seton Catholic 45, Tri High 9.
