Richmond Community Orchestra is spotlighting American composers’ jazz, patriotic and folk tunes during its annual outdoor concert.
The orchestra will perform in a relaxed atmosphere at 7 p.m. Monday, June 8, in Glen Miller Park, 2200 E. Main St., Richmond, at the Roosevelt Hill band shell. All ages are welcome.
Medleys of familiar Duke Ellington and Stephen Foster tunes are planned, along with Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust.”
Celebrating America’s 250th birthday, the orchestra is playing a new composition, “Fanfare 250,” as well as military tributes including John Philip Sousa’s “Semper Fidelis March,” Aaron Copland’s “Letter From Home” and Geo Buchholz’s “6th U.S. Infantry.”
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring seating and a picnic dinner or snacks.
Admission is free, but donations can be made afterward for orchestra programs, which include free introductory violin lessons for local children.
Orchestra musicians range from high school students to retirees and workers in careers such as healthcare, dentistry, information technology and music education.
RCO’s rain date is June 15.
