Centerville town council opened its June 30 meeting with a public hearing to adopt resolutions for its comprehensive plan. Project manager Rose Scovel provided an overview of the multifaceted project.

Funded in part by an Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs planning grant, the comprehensive plan touches on community development topics including land use, transportation, housing, parks and recreation, and broadband access.

With no public commentary, the public hearing was closed and the board approved resolutions to accept the comprehensive plan and make it official town policy. The plan was also previewed at a public hearing two weeks prior to meet state requirements.

Main Street’s Tom Peck asked about current and future street conditions. With parking impacted by increased traffic from the interstate, President Dan Wandersee said while not permanent, the loss of parking on Main Street is under INDOT’s jurisdiction. And Peck’s request for a crosswalk in the Crown Creek area would require more extensive planning with town manager Kevin Slick. Peck will discuss amphitheater access and police security for a farmers market event on July 18 with the parks and police departments.

Slick received approval for two Community Crossing payments at $99,825.98 and $1,091.77, and spending $2,200 for a tree removal. Slick reported minor outages during electric work and some transformers may need to be replaced. A system review with IMPA was approved at a cost of $21,500.

Police Chief Josh Millsaps noted a discrepancy between his and Clerk-Treasurer Sarah Rice’s records for officer benefit days. After some discussion, Millsaps and Rice plan to meet to resolve the issue. Council approved Millsaps’s request to start a hiring list to fill a vacancy as an officer remains on FMLA. Rice confirmed that the department’s purchase of a Ford Explorer was complete.

The fire department acquired a new command truck and hopes to transition to the county’s new 800-megahertz radio system on July 23. A July 11 open house to celebrate Nia Pettus’ Junior Volunteer Firefighter of the Year award will be held at Station 1 from 12-2 p.m. All are invited.

A request from Todd Jones was approved to shut down W. Plum Street from 4-11 p.m. for Independence Day festivities. Wandersee mentioned the cyber security system would be undergoing review for any updates.

Town hall was closed July 3 and 4 for the holiday and reopened Monday, July 6, at 8 a.m. The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 14 at the municipal building, 220 E. Main St., Centerville. The public may attend.
