After the unusual start to the new school year, the Northeastern school board convened for its Aug. 18 meeting with hearts of gratitude. While school facilities encountered minor flood damage, Superintendent Jennifer O’Brien shared that some families remain displaced and without power. On Aug. 19, the middle and high school began collecting donations to share with Williamsburg residents.
O’Brien also highlighted Athletic Director Ryan Halloran for his efforts to keep student sports active as floodwaters delayed renovations to the school’s track and football field. Halloran coordinated with Earlham College to have practices and the season’s first home game at its field. Board President Shawntel Baker echoed this sentiment, and she thanked all maintenance and staff members for helping in the cleanup.
Board member Debbie Bartram said she was impressed with how the community schools jumped in and worked together. Baker added that Wayne County schools are special because “they all want what’s best for our kids.”
Administration report
O’Brien relayed updates for several construction projects at both schools. The elementary school received three new heating/cooling units, with new lighting and a cooling system to be installed next month, and the playground is getting new fencing. Work on bleachers and the track was pushed back a week, but should be finished in time for the Sept. 4 football game. Repairs to the high school gym’s wall and roof will progress after O’Brien meets with the construction team.
The school is prepared to expand its virtual option for Northeastern students with unique circumstances. Partnering with Central Indiana Education Center, the school offers hybrid or all online options. While the teachers are licensed through the CIEC, school policies remain. If the student fails to adhere to attendance policies, the school can require them to return to in-person instruction.
The board plans to seek letters of interest for a new board member. Baker suggested they begin their search next month to have a candidate selected by November and start in January.
Other business
The board unanimously approved all consent items, with Baker abstaining on the personnel vote. Under new business, the board approved MOUs with Communities In Schools, IU East and Girls Inc.; a calendar amendment seeking makeup-day waivers; advertising of the 2027 budget; an updated crisis plan; updates to the Latchkey handbook; and the 2025-26 superintendent evaluation. One policy was approved while another was voted to a second reading.
