John O. Hungerford, 84, of New Castle passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born on February 3, 1938 in Rushville, Indiana, a son of the late Vaughn and Francis (Tompkins) Hungerford.

John grew up in Milroy then later moved to New Castle and attended the New Castle Schools. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955 and served his country honorably as an airplane mechanic until 1959. John met Sue Dunn in 1959 and they were married on January 2, 1960. Together they enjoyed camping, visiting family in Kentucky and owned and operated Fadelys Tavern. John worked for Delco Remy in Anderson and retired after 31 years. He enjoyed tinkering with things, working on cars, watching auto racing, his favorite being Nascar and the Indianapolis Colts.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Sue Hungerford; children, Debbie (husband: Rodney) McKinley, Sharlet Hungerford (Jeremy Leigh) and Crystal Shawn Hungerford; grandchildren, Branden McKinley (Whitney Collins), Amber (husband: Gary) Waters, Heather Miller, Joshua Davis, Geordyn (husband: Carson) Zile and Faron Hudson (Brittany Romine); great-grandchildren, Kyah, Dane, Roman, Kolt, Kamden, Kruz, and Bettie; a sister, Vonda Ballenger; a brother-in-law, Byron Ballenger; a sister-in-law, Ima Caldwell and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings, Donna, Dixie, Linda, Margaret, Jerry, Carl and Errol.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Douglas officiating. Entombment will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens with military honors conducted by contingents from the U.S. Air Force and American Legion.
