Elmer R. New, 66, of New Castle passed away Friday morning, August 5, 2022 at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. He was born November 1, 1955 in New Castle, Indiana, a son of the late Elmer Jr. and May (Catron) New.
Elmer was a 1974 graduate of New Castle High School and attended Ball State University. He was a 1986 graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. He was previously employed for many years at Hall’s Service Station and Westinghouse of Muncie. Elmer began his law enforcement career at the Henry County Sheriff’s Department in 1985 where he worked as a Road Deputy until 1995. He then served as an Investigator and retired in 2015 as Detective Sergeant. Elmer was a founding member of the Henry County SWAT team and the Henry County Area Drug Task Force. He was also employed part time after retirement at the Knightstown Police Department, most recently employed as a Court Officer at Henry County Justice Center until the time of his death.
Elmer resided in rural Lewisville for 34 years before recently returning to New Castle. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed everything outdoors, including horses, which he owned for several years. Elmer loved spending time with family as well as weight lifting. Elmer had a passion for biking, completing the Hilly Hundred several times and was a spectator of sports of all kinds.
Survivors include his wife of almost 40 years, Marsha (Jackson) New; sons, Daniel A. New of Indianapolis and Jared M. New (Kristin Wesley) of Indianapolis, daughter, Katie M. New (Chandler) Modesitt of New Castle; three grandchildren, John William New and Abby Rose New, both of Indianapolis and Savanna Kay Modesitt of New Castle; sister, Connie New (Dale) Hicks of New Castle; mother-in-law, Sheila McGinnis Jackson of Morristown, brother-in-law, Jay Jackson of New Castle; and several aunts, uncles & cousins.
In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Richard Jackson, brother-in-law, Ronald Onkst; and several aunts, uncles & cousins.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Anthony Darling officiating. Burial will follow in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
