HAGERSTOWN – Mildred Leona Hilbert Shellenberger, age 100 years five months, died Sunday, February 17, 2019, at Bayshore Guest Homes and Gardens in Nokomis, FL.
She was born in Henry County on September 23, 1918 to Carl and Grace Hilbert. She was a 1936 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Upon leaving Hagerstown, she resided in Denver, CO, and Dallas, TX, before returning to Hagerstown. While living in Denver, she worked as head cook at the South High School cafeteria.
Upon the retirement of her husband, George Shellenberger, following 33 years of service at Perfect Circle, the went to Venice / Nokomis, FL to check out the circus and Clown College, “for the fun of it.” George got a job as master craftsman for R.B.B.C. and Mildred began working as a seamstress on the clown costumes. George worked there for 27 years and Mildred worked as needed for 20 years.
“What a life and fun times they had.” When George died on February 22, 2002, they had been married for 65 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Deanna Joyce Maxey and Donna Mae Beuthel; a sister, Ruth Baliles; three grandsons; one granddaughter; two great grandsons; two great granddaughters; one great great granddaughter and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Hilbert and Lewis Hilbert, and a sister, Margaret Dilling.
Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Friday, February 22, at Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown. Services will follow at 2:00 PM. Pastor Brian Mackie will officiate. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery.
Mildred requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Church of the Brethren, 1451 Dundee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120-1674.
