One local resident was killed and one was seriously injured in a Saturday afternoon motorcycle accident northwest of Hagerstown.
Seven local teams of first responders assisted at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Dalton Road south of Lamar Road, said Wayne County Sheriff Randy Retter in a news release. The accident took place southwest of the intersection of Indiana 1 and U.S. 35.
An initial investigation indicated a 1998 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling south on Dalton Road when for an unknown reason it went off the west side of the roadway.
Two individuals were on the motorcycle at the time of the crash.
Both were ejected from the Harley-Davidson as it went airborne over a creek, Retter said.
Shelby Masters of Hagerstown was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jeffrey Flora of New Castle was flown from the scene by LifeLine medical helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was in critical condition as of 6 p.m. Saturday.
Retter said neither rider wore a helmet at the time of the crash.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Hagerstown Fire Department, Hagerstown Police Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana Conservation Officers, Culberson EMS and Richmond Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene.
