Virgus Browning Sr., 81, passed away at his residence in Liberty, Indiana, during the early hours of Monday, January 21st, 2019. He was born to parents Robert Sr. and Lottie (Roberts) Browning on March 17th, 1937, in Metamora, Indiana.
Virgus is survived by his wife, Jennifer McMurray, daughters, Jamie Yagle of Cambridge City, Shellie (Brian) Browning Perry, of Liberty, Victoria (Lennie Helms) Browning, of Brookville, Savannah (Aaron) Browning-Halcomb, of Liberty, and Anastatia Browning, of Liberty; sons, Gordon (Verla) Browning, of Liberty, and Jason Walker Browning, of Indianapolis; sisters, Wanda Conley and Brenda Browning, and brothers, William, Neal, Rex, and Anthony. Virgus Sr. has 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Virgus is proceeded in death by his son, Virgus Browning Jr., grandson, Michael Jarvis Browning, and younger brothers, Herb Browning and Robert Browning Jr.
For over 100 years, his family has been a part of the logging industry. Virgus continued the family tradition of selective harvest of mature hardwood for global markets as well as operating his own sawmill for consumers of custom lumber. He was a member of the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association.
Virgus appreciated art with a special emphasis on Western landscapes, rustic American frontier nostalgia, and various harvest related materials throughout his lifetime. Virgus was a proud donator to the Boy Scouts and regularly donated to local charities. He attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Connersville, Indiana. Virgus will always be remembered as a loving provider to his family.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 24th, 2019 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Urban-Winkler Liberty Funeral Home, 310 N. Main St. The funeral service will be at 11:00am on Friday, January 25th, at the funeral home, with the burial procession to follow from there to Maple Grove Cemetery Association of Brookville, Indiana. After the ceremony, friends and family are welcome to attend a pitch-in at the funeral home. Donations can be made to the Union County Foundation to the Virgus Browning Sr. Memorial Fund.
