Fred Louis Cheesman, 97, of Springport passed away Saturday, September 4, 2021 at his residence. He was born June 3, 1924 in Dalton, Indiana to the late Carl and Madge (Hadley) Cheesman.
He was a 1942 graduate of Economy High School then joined the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946 in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean aboard the USS Polaris AF11 during WWII. During his years of service, he traveled 18 different countries including Tinian Island. After discharge from the Navy, he was a heavy equipment operator and co-owned Cheesman Brothers Bridge Construction from 1969-1986 when he retired. He was a member of the Local 103 since 1950 and a member of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church.
He is survived by his sons, Russell (Connie) Cheesman of New Castle, Fred Louis II (Susan) Cheesman of Williamsburg, VA, Douglas (Lynn) Cheesman of Springport; 11 grandchildren, Amber M. (Brice), Andrea (Phil), Summer, Amber W., Rocky (Kelli), Nick, Brant, Fred III and Christy; 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mable, Whom he married on October 20, 1951; siblings, Thomas Ralph, Percy Carl, Richard Hadley, David, Mazie Maxine, John Henry and William Harry Cheesman and Rosemary Clotioux.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Donald Silvers officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Garden in Kokomo. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by contingents from the U.S. Navy and the Kokomo American Legion.
