Mary Lou Evans, age 84, of Centerville, Indiana, died Monday, March 29, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born October 10, 1936, in Richmond, Indiana, to Thomas and Phyllis Sheffer Hampton, Mary Lou was a 1954 graduate of Williamsburg High School. She was a GTE phone operator and a teacher’s aide at Centerville Jr. High School for 24 years, until she retired in 2012. Mary Lou was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Card Club, and Book Club. She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, camping, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Walter F. “Bus” Evans; children, Gary (Susan de la Vergne) Evans of Palm Springs, California, Jolene Brown of Troy, Ohio, and Butch (Beth) Evans and Collean (Dale) Henwood, both of Centerville; grandchildren, Jennifer (Nick) Clark, Catherine Evans, Ryan Hohenhausen, Tina (Travis) Round, Timothy Brown, Brent (Courtney) Evans, Brooke (Jay) Bentlage, LaCole (Marcus) Fleagle, and Cody Henwood; great-grandchildren, Luke and Abby Clark, Trenton and Taylor Round, Brayden Fox, Olivia Brown, Blakeley Evans, Braxton and Aiden Bentlage, and Granger Fleagle; sister-in-law, Bonnie McClain; nephew, Jon McClain; and many friends including special friends, the Dieterle family, Helen Herning, and Jan Fahien.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Jakoby Fleagle; son-in-law, Bill Brown; father; mother, Phyllis McClain and stepdad, Emerson “Red” McClain; brother, Ronald McClain; nephew, Ronald McClain Jr.; and special friend, Larry Herning.

Visitation for Mary Lou Evans will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2021, at Mills Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, Centerville. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2021, at Mills Funeral Home with Pastor David Barnett officiating. Please plan to wear your own mask in the funeral home. Burial will be in Bryan Cemetery.
