Joyce P. Farmer, Economy, passed away peacefully at the age of 91, on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

Joyce was born on May 30, 1929, in New Castle, Indiana to Fred and Martha (McLear) Johnson.  She was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School and earned a medical assisting degree in Elkhart, Indiana in 1948.  She worked as a medical assistant at Reid Hospital and for Dr. Mader in Richmond.  She managed the Hagerstown Elementary School cafeteria for many years and loved seeing the smiling faces of the children every day.

Joyce married Lewis H. Farmer on November 20, 1950.  She and Lewis lived together in the home they built in rural Economy where they raised their five children.  Lewis preceded Joyce in death in 2010.  Their home was the site of decades of family gatherings, reunions, pool parties, Easter egg hunts, baby showers and Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations.  Joyce cooked and served big family meals until she was 85 years old.

Joyce was a longtime member of the Economy Methodist Church.  She served on many committees and shared her lovely singing voice in the church choir. Joyce never missed an opportunity to bake someone a pie or cake and she knitted numerous afghans, baby blankets and dishcloths over the years. She was an avid reader and tv sports fan, especially basketball.  She loved it when IU beat Purdue!

Joyce is survived by her five children: Kathy (Ed) Rager of Indiana, Pennsylvania; Julie King of Hagerstown; Rodger (Candy) Farmer of New Hudson, Michigan; Brian (Chris) Farmer of Hagerstown; and David (Amy) Farmer of Modoc.  She was the proud grandmother 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.  She is also survived by her sister Janice (Bill) Ashinger of Hope, Michigan and a wealth of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 65 years.
