Joseph M. Smith, 86, went Home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 9, 2020. He was a lifelong resident of Hagerstown, where he resided with his wife of 48 years, Julia L. Owens Smith.
Born August 13, 1934, to Forest C. and Ada Pitman Smith, Joe was
a United States Army Veteran, and retired from Perfect Circle, Dana Corporation, after 30-plus years of service. He faithfully attended church at The White Branch Church of the Brethren and Locust Grove Brethren Church.
Joe was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and horseback riding, and was a passionate beekeeper. Up until the time of his passing, Joe tended 50-plus beehives, spending countless hours daily working with them. He was an amazing storyteller and prankster. He enjoyed passing the time visiting with friends, family and even strangers, and fulfilling his commitment to Christ.
Joe is survived by one son, Jeffrey (Vonne) Smith; four grandchildren Josh (Keturah) Snediger, Wesley (Leander) Snediger, Amanda (Timothy) Stimler, and Brandi (Angel) Smith; one step-grandson Justin (Darcy) Russell; five great-grandchildren, whom he adored, James, Xander, Courtney, Autumn and Harlan; three step-great-grandchildren Emma, Kendal and Will; one brother, David (Mary Ann) Smith; longtime companion Patricia Peirce; and, special beekeeping friend, Anna Meyers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Julia; precious daughter, Karen (David) Snediger; and, brothers Forest D. Smith, Harold Smith and Wilbur Smith.
Joe will be fondly remembered, and truly missed, by a host of nieces, nephews, family, neighbors and friends.
Visitation will be Monday, December 14th from 5:00-8:00PM, at Culberson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, December 15th at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Nettle Creek Friends Cemetery.
