Michael A. Hinshaw, age 78, of Richmond, Indiana, died Friday, December 29, 2017, at home after a battle with brain cancer.
Mike was born in Richmond on March 27, 1939, and grew up in the Quaker teachings and traditions on a 240-acre farm in Fountain City.
After graduating from Fountain City High School (1957), and then Earlham College (1961), he left Wayne County to pursue a career in medicine. He became a partner in General Surgeons, Inc. (the first professional corporation formed under Indiana law), and practiced medicine as a surgeon at Reid Memorial Hospital. Over his 25 years in private practice, he was known for his warm and respectful bedside manner with his patients and their families, as well as his exceptional surgery skills. In 1992, he received the Paul S. Rhoads Humanity in Medicine Award.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carol Hinshaw; son Mark (Pam) Hinshaw of Kansas City, son James (Amy) Hinshaw of Indianapolis, and daughter Michele Hinshaw of Indianapolis; grandchildren Matthew, Laura, and Rachael Hinshaw; sister-in-law Lynda Hinshaw of Richmond.
Visitation was Jan. 5 at Doan & Mills Funeral Home in Richmond. Service was Jan. 6 at Central United Methodist Church in Richmond.
