Bertha Ray, 96, of New Castle went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at The Waters of New Castle. She was born October 27, 1923 in New Castle, a daughter of the late George W. and Edna (Sumpter) Burden.

She was a lifetime New Castle resident and a 1942 New Castle High School graduate and was a member of the National Honor Society. A homemaker the majority of the time, Bertha had held part-time positions at Grants and JCPenney. She was known for her giving spirit and felt it a privilege to volunteer with the Cerebral Palsy of Henry County, Gray Ladies and Foster Grandparents. Bertha was an active member of the First Assembly of God in New Castle.

Survivors include two daughter, Joan (Chad) Critser and Lois (Dewey) Witham, both of New Castle; a son, John J. (Alice) Ray, Jr. of Galveston, TX; eight grandchildren, Rebecca Thompson, Chad Critser, Jr., Robert M. Saul, John Saul, Sheri Sparks, John Alexander, Keith and Gil Ray; 10 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Lantz, of Ft. Wayne; brother-in-law, Glen Ray of New Castle and several nieces & nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Ray; brothers, Joseph W. Burden, George W. Burden, Jr.; sisters, Mary Belle Ray and Alleen Cole; son-in-law, Marion “Bud” Saul.

Services will be 11:00am Monday, May 18, 2020 at the First Assembly of God in New Castle with Pastor Matt Malek officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-6pm Sunday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle, where the Governors mandate of 25 or less people (at a time) and social distancing will be observed.
