Lincoln Middle/High School has selected a 30-year Western Wayne Schools employee as grand marshal of its homecoming parade.
Jan Lunsford, who retired in June as LMHS administrative assistant and extracurricular activities treasurer, will be featured in the 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, parade.
In their announcement, Lincoln’s Student Government members quoted Lunsford as saying she was blessed to have the best job for 30 years.
During her first year at WWS in 1996, the current elementary school opened after elementary schools were consolidated. She worked at WWES for 22 years before transferring to LMHS for the role she had until retirement.
“I am proud to be a Lincoln Eagle, and I am so excited to see the great things happening at Western Wayne Schools,” she told the students.
The parade route will change this year because of Interstate 70 construction diverting wide loads and additional traffic onto U.S. 40. Safety concerns have impacted events normally taking place on the National Road.
The parade heads east from the front of LMHS (205 E. Parkway Drive, Cambridge City), north on Lincoln Drive, and east on Delaware Street to Western Wayne Elementary School. Spectators are encouraged to stay on the sidewalks along school property and on Delaware Street or the grassy area at the elementary.
Lincoln Golden Eagle Industries is planning a community tailgate immediately after the parade at the high school.
Students announced they want to give back to the community after the Aug. 12 flooding, so meals will be free. Pulled pork, firehouse baked beans, smoked macaroni and cheese, lemonade, and cookies will be served.
