Times have changed for Northeastern football. Twenty seasons ago, the team was 0-10. The current Knight team is the defending Tri-Eastern Conference champion and is the only unbeaten team in league play this season.

The Knights traveled to Cambridge City on Friday, Sept. 12, for a TEC game against Lincoln.

The Knights stunned the crowd by scoring a school record 63 points in the first quarter en route to a 89-6 win. The 89 points are also a school record for a game.

Knight quarterback Marshall Phillips only threw seven passes in the game, but he completed all seven, including touchdown passes to Cam Gipson and Quanell Denton and three more to speed merchant Trent Deloney.

The Knight attack was very balanced. They threw for 235 yards and rushed for 235 yards.

The Knight defense was balanced as well. Gavin Harrison and Gavin Platt each had nine tackles, Coleton Bostic added seven tackles and Dakota May had six. Three other Knight defenders had four or more tackles. May and Lyden Berger were each credited with sacks.

Nine different Knights scored, led by Deloney with 26 points on four touchdowns and two-point conversions. Corbin Isaacs scored three touchdowns. Luke Billings, Bryce Brittenham, Denton, Gipson, Platt and Olympus Yancy each scored touchdowns, and Phillips kicked nine extra points.

Lincoln quarterback Braxton Dick completed three of 15 pass attempts for 86 yards, including a third-quarter touchdown pass to Caden Alvarez. Dick was also the leading rusher for Lincoln with 29 yards on 11 carries.

Northeastern’s Gavin Platt (21) sails past Lincoln’s defense for another Knight touchdown.

Kaiden Carver and Drake Waddell each had five tackles to lead the Eagles, and Billy McKeown recovered a fumble.

Both teams will stay in conference play next week. The Knights will host Union City on Friday, Sept. 19, and Lincoln will travel to Hagerstown the same night.
