The Richmond football team hosted Monroe Central, members of the Mid-Eastern Conference, on Friday, Sept. 5. It was the first meeting between the two schools but Monroe Central coach John Hochstetler is familiar with the Richmond program, having been the head coach at Muncie Central for 13 years before taking over at Monroe Central.
The game was close in the first half with the Red Devils clinging to an 8-7 lead at halftime. The Red Devils began to wear the Bears down in the second half and pulled away to take a 34-15 win.
The Red Devils played well on both sides of the ball.
Jai Allen was the leading ground gainer for the Devils with 124 rushing yards, including a long of 66 yards and two touchdowns. Tyziyah Stubbs rushed for 106 yards, including a long of 51 yards and a touchdown. Ja’Riyah Delucio had 53 receiving yards and a touchdown. Thomas Stargell rushed for 61 yards, was 3-9 passing and added a touchdown. Lewis Alexander rushed for 52 yards and scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Keylin Walker completed five of six passing attempts for 72 yards.
Maurice Hibbler led the Devil defense with 15 tackles and Kylin Cooper had nine tackles. Jayvonne Burdette and Darwyn Rowan both had six tackles and each had a sack. Camden Reed had six assists. Adaiah Belcher and Dallas Hogg each had five tackles.
Most of the Bears’ offense was on the ground. They gained 226 yards rushing but only 41 yards passing.
The Red Devils will go on the road Friday, Sept. 12, for a game at South Dearborn.
