Seton Catholic and Hagerstown, two programs with substantial past success, met on Thursday, Sept. 4, for a nonconference volleyball clash at Robert E. Clark Gymnasium. The match saw Jolie Scherschel’s return to the court for the Lady Cards after she had been sidelined with an injury for the last four matches.

The two programs are coached by Emily Tremain (SC) and Brian Dale (HHS), who are the only active Wayne County volleyball coaches to have guided their teams to the semi-state level of the state tournament.

The Lady Cardinals won 26 matches and made it to the Frankfort semi-state last season, but they were swept during the regular season by Hagerstown. The series has always been a friendly rivalry that becomes intensely competitive once the matches begin.

Hagerstown dominated the first set, racing to a 9-0 lead and closing out the set 25-12, their biggest lead of the match. The Lady Cardinals bounced back to force nine ties, the last at 19-19, before pulling away to win the second set and tie the match.

The pivotal third set saw the Cardinals build a 15-10 lead before the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Tigers never trailed again, winning 25-20. The fourth set was all Hagerstown. The Tigers took a 16-4 lead and coasted to a 25-13 win to win the match 3-1.
