Nearly everything goes up in price in 10 years, and elections are likely no exception.
Cambridge City paid $1,086 in 2015, the last year the town needed its own election.
If the town has a contested council race this fall, it’s responsible for covering the election costs. Election officials are still determining what that amount would be in 2025.
The final filing deadline is about two weeks away for some candidates.
Two incumbents stepped forward to run again for their council seats. Independent candidates had to file by June 30. Debbie McGinley and Jim McLane submitted their forms to Wayne County election officials before their deadline.
Their two seats would be the only two on the ballot in 2025 for the five-member council.
Candidates declaring as Republicans, Democrats or Libertarians have until noon Aug. 1 to file. They must live within town boundaries to be eligible to run.
Republicans and Democrats need to visit the courthouse, 301 E. Main St., Richmond, to pick up and submit their paperwork.
Interested Libertarians need to contact their party’s leadership for approval to join the ballot. Tom Ferkinhoff told WWN earlier this year he was continuing as chair of Wayne County’s Libertarian Party. For more information about Libertarian candidacies, call 765-967-4562.
If no one files in addition to McGinley and McLane, no election is needed.
If two candidates from one party would file for one of the seats, a town convention would be needed to finalize the ballot.
If an election is needed, it would take place from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 4. Voters need to register by Oct. 6 to cast a ballot.
Cambridge City is the only Wayne County town with a potential 2025 ballot.
Council previously rejected county officials’ request to modify its election schedule to be on the county/Congressional or Congress/presidential election cycle.
Councilors prefer drawing attention to local issues, keeping candidates from being overlooked among regional, state and national races that draw more attention, and separating as much as possible from partisan politics.
