Two incumbents have stepped forward to run again for Cambridge City’s town council, but the final filing deadline is a few weeks away for some candidates.
Debbie McGinley and Jim McLane submitted their forms to Wayne County election officials before the June 30 filing deadline for independent candidates.
Their two seats are the only seats on the ballot in 2025 for the five-member council.
Candidates must live within town boundaries to be eligible to run.
Those wanting to run as Republicans, Democrats or Libertarians have until noon Aug. 1 to file.
Republicans and Democrats need to visit the courthouse, 301 E. Main St., Richmond, to pick up and submit their paperwork.
Any interested Libertarians need to contact their party’s leadership for approval to join the ballot. Tom Ferkinhoff told WWN earlier this year he was continuing as chair of Wayne County’s Libertarian Party. For more information about Libertarian candidacies, call 765-967-4562.
If no one files in addition to McGinley and McLane, they will be considered holdovers and no election will be conducted, said Wayne County Clerk Tara Pegg.
If two candidates from one party would file for one of the seats, a town convention would need to be conducted to finalize the ballot, with a date to be determined.
If an election is needed, it would take place from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 4. Voters would need to register by Oct. 6 to cast a ballot.
County’s only election
Cambridge City is the only Wayne County town conducting an election this year.
County officials had asked Cambridge City’s council to modify its election schedule to be on the county/Congressional or Congress/presidential election cycle.
However, at a previous public meeting, members discussed the request and decided they wanted to stay on the current election schedule. They would prefer to draw more attention to local issues, avoid candidates getting overlooked among regional, state and national races that draw more attention, and separate councilors as much as possible from partisan politics.
