Inspectors discovered 11 critical and 18 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local food establishments.

The violations include the ongoing presence of rodents (read an update on this violation here), unsanitary employee practices, dirty equipment, equipment requiring repair and improper food temperatures.

Establishments are required to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.

Wayne County Health Department employees collected these concerns between March 22-April 6.

Critical violations

  • April 4: Back 40 Grocery, 17626 Frank Meyers Road, Cambridge City. One critical: Hand-washing sink not provided in rear storage/packaging area. To be corrected by May 4. One noncritical: Rear storage opens directly into private residence. To be corrected by May 4.
  • April 3: The Dairy, 255 E. College St., Hagerstown. Two critical: Employee Health Policy is not posted. To be corrected by April 13. Coney sauce, cooked and cooled from the previous day, was reheated in a slow cooker at 109 degrees Fahrenheit, instead of the required 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Corrected during inspection. 
  • April 2: Arby’s, 215 National Road W., Richmond. One critical: Rodent droppings found under lobby soda machine. To be corrected that day. NOTE: Pest control company to be called within 14 days (by April 16) regarding continuing rodent problem.
  • April 2: Pizza King #76, 51 N. Perry St., Hagerstown. One critical: Employee Health Policy is not posted on the premises. To be corrected by April 12. Two noncritical: Stem-type probe thermometer measured 28 degrees Fahrenheit in ice water mixture; inspector’s digital probe thermometer measured 32.6 degrees Fahrenheit. To be corrected by April 9. Cardboard rounds near oven placed less than six inches from the floor. To be corrected by April 9.
  • Subway #7, 3601 E. Main St., Richmond. One critical: Meatballs in marinara at 87 degrees Fahrenheit, rather than the required 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Voluntarily discarded. Two noncritical: Manager didn’t wear a hair net when working with exposed food. To be corrected that day. Dirty storage room floor. To be corrected that day. 
  • March 26: Fazoli’s, 4711 National Road E., Richmond. One critical: Employee meal and three open beverages in food preparation area. To be corrected that day. Two noncritical: Paper towels not provided at hand sink. Motion-sensor towel dispenser not functioning. Both to be corrected that day.
  • March 26: La Petite Pastry Shop, 610 E. Main St., Richmond. One critical: No Certified Food Manager on premises. To be corrected by June 26.
  • March 26: Lucky’s Supermarket Inc., 473 E. Main St., Hagerstown. Two critical: No Certified Food Manager on site. To be corrected by June 26. Deli items (for coleslaw and various salads) were removed from original containers–new containers are not date-marked. To be corrected that day. Two noncritical: Reach-in cooler items (ham salad, macaroni salad, potato salad and cole slaw) had no ingredient information on containers. To be corrected by April 5. Meat/deli department stem-type thermometer held in an ice water solution measuring 45 degrees Fahrenheit, instead of the required 32 degrees Fahrenheit. To be corrected that day. 
  • March 25: Bismarck Donuts & Coffee, 1241 N.W. Fifth St., Richmond. One critical: Equipment and utensils are not being sanitized after being washed/rinsed at the three-bay sink. To be corrected that day. One noncritical: Drink spoons stored in containers of standing water. To be corrected that day.

Noncritical violations

  • April 3: Pizza King #14, 2916 E. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical: Dirty floors near wash stations. To be corrected that day.
  • March 31: Frisch’s Big Boy #204, 3704 National Road E., Richmond. Four noncritical: Hand sink requires repair. To be corrected by April 30. Storage room lights and lights above fryer/grill not working at time of inspection. To be corrected by April 30. Walk-in cooler had dirty ceiling vents and fan guards. To be corrected by April 11. Dirty soda and coffee nozzles. To be corrected that day.
  • March 31: SK Hope Corner Store, 1203 S. 13th St., Richmond. Two noncritical: No labeling information on packages of Kool-Aid Jammers (beverages) stored in ice, and products labeled “Not for Individual Sale.” To be corrected that day. Reach-in container containing canned soda and other beverages has ice in direct contact with the opening/mouth of each beverage. To be corrected that day.
  • March 26: Firehouse BBQ and Blues, 400 N. Eighth St., Richmond. One noncritical: Food residue on manual can opener. Corrected during inspection.  

Complaints

  • April 1: McDonald’s, 2320 Chester Blvd., Richmond: Complaint about possible foodborne illness. Discussed food processes with manager. No issues found at time of inspection. 

Corrections

  • March 28: Elks Country Club, 2100 U.S. 27 S., Richmond. Items corrected from March 10 inspection (soiled utensils, washbasin needed repair, tiki torch fluid stored on food prep table). 
  • March 24: El Mezcal Grill, 408 E. Main St., Cambridge City. Item corrected from March 14 inspection (raw meat wasn’t at correct temperature). 
  • March 24: Main Street Quick Pix, 2 E. Main St., Cambridge City. Items corrected from March 14 inspection (hot holding station needed repair and a thermometer).

No violations

  • Cambridge City: American Legion Post #169, Chug-a-Lug Pub.
  • Hagerstown: Boys and Girls Clubs-Hagerstown Unit; Hagerstown Little League Concession. 
  • Richmond: Corner Café at the Leland; Dana Bakes Gluten Free; Dollar Tree (3513 E. Main St.); Lee’s Famous Recipe (1801 E. Main St.); Maria Mitrione’s Italian Market; Market at Swayzee; Mercurio’s Pizza; Richmond Community Schools’ McBride Stadium; Starbucks; Subway #2 (1726 National Road W.); Subway #3 (2425 Chester Blvd.); Ullery’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Employer vending, schools

Inspections

Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice per year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
