Inspectors discovered nine critical and nine noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local food establishments.

The violations include unsanitary employee practices, dirty equipment and improper procedures in food preparation areas.

Establishments are required to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.

Wayne County Health Department employees collected these concerns between Jan. 8-31.  

Critical violations

  • Jan. 24: Mancino’s Pizza & Grinders, 217 National Road W., Richmond. One critical: Employee observed not washing hands after removing trash. Corrected during inspection.
  • Jan. 14: Baymont Inn by Wyndham, 912 Mendleson Drive, Richmond. One critical: No Certified Food Manager on staff. To be corrected by Feb. 15.
  • Jan. 10: 1896 Coffee, 25 W. Main St., Hagerstown. Three critical: No Certified Food Manager on staff. To be corrected by April 10. Scrapper hose at the three-bay sink hangs below flood rim. To be corrected by Jan. 20. Equipment and utensils are washed/rinsed in a food prep sink, bypassing the sanitization step. To be corrected that day. Two noncritical: Wiping cloths are stored on counters instead of being washed and rinsed in a container of sanitizer. To be corrected that day. Second floor opens directly into a living/sleeping quarters area. To be corrected by April 10.
  • Jan. 9: Comfort Suites, 421 Commerce Road, Richmond. Three critical: Potentially hazardous foods were not date-marked. To be corrected that day. Hand sink contained a bleach bottle and dishrags. To be corrected that day. No Certified food handler on staff. 
  • Jan. 9: Quality Inn and Suites, 5501 National Road E., Richmond. One critical: Potentially hazardous foods were not date-marked. To be corrected that day.

Noncritical violations

  • Jan. 31: Burger King, 1816 National Road W., Richmond. One noncritical: Box of frozen french fries stored on the walk-in floor, instead of being at least 6 inches off the floor. Corrected during inspection. 
  • Jan. 31: Pizza King, 203 W. Main St., Richmond. Two noncritical: Food residue on soda nozzle. Walk-in cooler needs cleaning due to food debris on the floor. Both corrected during inspection.
  • Jan. 29: Apple Dough LLC dba Little Caesars, 1503 E. Main St., Richmond. Two noncritical: Sink separated from wall and in need of repair. To be corrected by March 1. Employee handing food without wearing a beard net. Manager will order beard restraints or employees will remove beards. To be corrected by Feb. 1.
  • Jan. 23: Dairy Queen, 1700 National Road W., Richmond. One noncritical: Employees handling food without wearing hair nets. Corrected during inspection. 
  • Jan. 8: Tam D Food Mart, 1221 S. Ninth St., Richmond. One noncritical: No test kit for sanitizer. To be corrected by Jan. 18.

Complaint

  • Jan. 28: El Bronco West, 2201 National Road W., Richmond. Complaint regarding carry-out order: bug on queso dip lid was reported. No evidence of insects in the restaurant, including areas where queso is held hot and in carryout order holding area. Manager mentioned that the dip contains small, dark green, diced jalapeños. No violation.

Inspections

Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice per year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
