It was a good day for Wayne County wrestlers and the programs they represented on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the IHSAA wrestling sectional hosted by Centerville High School. New Castle was the pre-tournament favorite and the Trojans were crowned sectional champions, but four of the next five places in the final team standings went to Wayne County schools. Northeastern was a close second, Centerville slid past Hagerstown for third and Richmond was sixth. Lincoln finished ninth.
The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the Richmond regional to be held on Saturday, Feb. 8.
106 pounds: Heather Crull (Northeastern) ran her record to 38-0 by winning the title for the fourth straight year. Crull pinned Zeke Fish from Eastern Hancock in the championship match. Carter Gross (Hagerstown) placed fourth.
113 pounds: Olivia Crull (Northeastern) placed second, losing to Isaia Garner (Tri High) by tech fall in the championship match. Robert Peacock (Richmond) placed third.
120 pounds: Lucas Chamness (Northeastern) defeated Andre Suggs (New Castle) by fall in the championship match. Isaiah Smith (Centerville) placed fourth.
126 pounds: Brendon Walker (Richmond) placed second, losing to Braydyn Volz (Eastern Hancock) by tech fall in the championship match.
132 pounds: After winning the 100th match of his career in a semifinal match, Conner Frazier (Centerville) placed second, losing to Tylin Thrine (New Castle) by fall in the championship match. Vanden Miller (Northeastern) placed third.
138 pounds: Gage Sherwood (Lincoln) defeated Carson Bell (New Castle) by fall in the championship match. Nick Roberts (Centerville) placed third.
144 pounds: Gus Golliher (Hagerstown) defeated Ty’Ziyah Stubbs (Richmond) by fall in the championship match. Kale Creech (Centerville) placed fourth.
150 pounds: Zach Golliher (Hagerstown) beat Zach Dehoff (Centerville) by tech fall in the championship match. Logan White (Northeastern) placed fourth.
157 pounds: Grant Soper (Centerville) defeated James Bond (Tri High) by tech fall in the championship match.
165 pounds: Thane Berger (Northeastern) placed second, losing to Darin Reynolds (New Castle) by tech fall in the championship match. Tziyon Phillips (Centerville) placed third.
175 pounds: Roy Thornbury (Hagerstown) defeated Trent Supinger (New Castle) by decision in the championship match. Wyatt Kier (Richmond) placed third.
190 pounds: Caleb Cohee (Northeastern) placed second, losing to Nathan Shafer (New Castle) by decision in the championship match. Wyatt Mitchell (Hagerstown) defeated Carter Jones (Richmond) for third place. Both advanced.
215 pounds: Zane Schneider (Northeastern) defeated Gehrig Fredenburg (Tri High) by fall in the championship match. Owen Mitchell (Hagerstown) defeated Anthony Monaghan (Lincoln) for third place; both advanced.
285 pounds: Michael Henderson (Northeastern) placed second, losing to Logan Mendoza (New Castle) by fall in the championship match. Charlie Wadsworth (Lincoln) placed third.
