Northeastern, fifth-ranked in the 2A poll, traveled to Liberty on Wednesday, Jan. 22, for an important Tri-Eastern Conference game with potential sectional opponent Union County.
The Lady Patriots tried to slow the game’s pace to negate the high-powered Northeastern offense. The strategy was initially effective. The score at the end of the first quarter was 3-3. A buzzer-beater 3-pointer at the end of the second quarter from Lady Knight senior Cami Angi propelled the Knights to a slim 13-11 halftime lead.
Northeastern made halftime adjustments and used defensive pressure to create Union County turnovers that led to points, which allowed the Knights to build a 12-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Knights went on to take a 31-19 win to improve to 20-1 and remain the only team without a loss in TEC play. Ava Mikesell led the Lady Knights with 8 points and Ady Kircher scored 7 points. Angi pulled down 11 rebounds for the winners.
