Inspectors discovered three critical and 19 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local establishments.

For instance, a convenience store’s soda machine cabinet had swollen wood from liquid leaks, and employees were found without beard restraints. 

Wayne County Health Department employees collected those concerns between Aug. 31-Sept. 16. 

Establishments are to post their most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.

Critical

  • Sept. 16: Elks Country Club, 2100 U.S. 27 S., Richmond. One critical and four noncritical. Critical: Containers of ready-to-eat items (shrimp, cole slaw and noodles) stored in the reach-in coolers, longer than 24 hours, are not date-marked. To be corrected that day. Noncritical: Refuse from previous day was not removed from premises. Corrected. Vents above fryer are heavily soiled (deadline Sept. 30). Walls within walk-in cooler are soiled with a black material (deadline Oct. 21). Boxes of single-use food items are stored directly on the floor rather than 6 inches or above (deadline Sept. 20).
  • Sept. 9: Penn Station East Coast Subs, 1500 E. Main St., Richmond. Two critical and two noncritical. Critical: Spray hose connected at three-bay sink isn’t protected against back siphonage. Spray nozzle was in on position when inspected. Discussed addition of hose bibb. (deadline Sept. 19). Two employee drinks were observed in open-lid containers. To be corrected that day. Noncritical: Two employees preparing food didn’t have beards effectively restrained (deadline Sept. 11). Three reach-in coolers aren’t provided ambient air thermometers. (Oct. 9 deadline).

Noncritical

  • Sept. 16: Sweet Blessings LLC, 625 E. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical. Manual can opener needed cleaning. Corrected during inspection. 
  • Sept. 11: Burger King, 4360 National Road E., Richmond. One noncritical. These areas needed cleaning: Floors under front-line units – soft-serve area; racks and floors along sandwich preparation line; walk-in cooler; single-service storage area; rear food preparation sink; eastside dry storage area. To be corrected by Sept. 19. Establishment is scheduled for a dining area remodel. Extensive cleaning might be accomplished during this time. 
  • Sept. 11: Subway, 1726 National Road W., Richmond. One noncritical: Dually scaled food temperature measuring device measured 1.3 degrees Celsius in ice/water mixture rather than 1 degree or below. To be corrected by Oct. 11.
  • Sept. 10: The Milk House, 765 S. E St., Richmond. One noncritical. Employee hand sink isn’t operational. Water has been turned off. To be corrected by Sept. 20.
  • Sept. 10: Dollar General, 712 N.W. Fifth St., Richmond. One noncritical. No thermometer was in the fresh food cooler. To be corrected by Sept. 20. 
  • Sept. 10: Firehouse BBQ & Blues, 400 N. Eighth St., Richmond. One noncritical. No thermometer in three reach-in coolers, one freezer. Manager advised they will have today. FOLLOW-UP: On Sept. 11, issue corrected. 
  • Sept. 9: American Legion #315, 514 S. L St., Richmond. One noncritical. Six boxes of single-service items were on floor rather than 6 inches or above. To be corrected by Sept. 13.
  • Sept. 7: Newman Eats, 130 N. 26th St., New Castle. One noncritical. No test kit. To be corrected by Sept. 8. Temporary permit granted.
  • Sept. 6: Lulu’s Tacos, 4563 National Road E., Richmond. One noncritical. Gap at bottom of back door, outer opening not protected. To be corrected in seven days. FOLLOW-UP: On Sept. 10, item was corrected. 
  • Sept. 6: National Food Mart, 5890 National Road E., Richmond. One noncritical. No thermometer in reach-in cooler where milk is stored for coffee bar. To be corrected in seven days. FOLLOW-UP: On Sept. 12, item corrected from earlier inspection. 
  • Sept. 5: Suzie’s Pizza, 820 E. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical. No test kit for sanitizer. To be corrected by Sept. 15. 
  • Sept. 4: Speedway, 4382 National Road E., Richmond. Two noncritical. Cabinet holding soda machine needs cleaning behind machine. To be corrected immediately. Facility needs repair. Cabinet holding soda machine and tea needs replaced or repaired. Cabinet is broken down and wood is swelled from liquid damage. Base cove is coming off cabinet. To be corrected in 30 days. 

Pre-operational

  • Sept. 13: Roasted, a Richmond-based mobile retail food establishment, is OK to open. 
  • Sept. 12: 911 Tavern, 911 E. Main St., Richmond. OK to open. No violations found.
  • Sept. 5: Chicago Pizza, 109 W. Main St., Cambridge City. Discussed base cove and caulking where floors meet walls for easy cleaning and protection of wood cabinets and walls. Discussed hole in walls in dry storage area. To be corrected before opening inspection. 

Follow-up

  • Sept. 16: Earlham College Hall Cafeteria, 801 National Road W., Richmond. Item corrected (wall and foundation issues) from Aug. 14 inspection.

Inspections

Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice a year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
