Banners filled with photos, empty chairs and purple ribbons offer powerful reminders of the dozens of Wayne County lives lost to overdose each year.

According to the Wayne County Health Department, 44 people died of overdose in 2023.

So far in 2024, the county has had 27 overdose fatalities. However, it takes a few weeks to finalize toxicology results, so that number likely is a bit low.

To keep sharing their stories, several community organizations will again partner to offer Wayne County’s observance of International Overdose Awareness Day.

The annual local gathering of hope and remembrance takes place from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at First United Methodist Church, 318 National Road W., Richmond.

It’s free and open to the public.

The 2024 theme is “Together We Can,” highlighting the power of community support in preventing overdose, honoring the people Wayne County has lost, and acknowledging the grief of friends and family left behind.

“This day is dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and showing that we are stronger together,” organizers say in promotional materials. “Let’s unite, share our stories, and support each other in the journey toward a healthier, safer community.”

Those attending can hear personal stories of recovery, learn about recovery resources and chat over refreshments.

The program often draws residents who’ve been touched by addiction in various ways. Some have a friend or loved one currently experiencing addiction. Others have been affected by overdose or encounter substance use in their work as first responders.

After drawing attention to the public health crisis and human impact of addiction, organizers hope to stimulate local action and discussion.

Recovery Rocks Club and Drug Free Wayne County Partnership are presenting this year’s tribute with help from several business, organization and individual sponsors.

Recovery Rocks offers several in-person weekly meetings in a cozy family home, 1701 S. E St. in Richmond, as well as online participation. Many of Recovery Rocks’ board members can share personal experiences with addiction in hopes of helping others.
