Rummel’s Auto Sales will soon move from Main Street Hagerstown to the owners’ Indiana 1 homesite.
Wayne County’s Board of Zoning Appeals approved Aug. 8 a variance of use for the property at 11070 N. Ind. 1 northwest of Economy. The variance permits a used-car lot with no more than 10 vehicles to operate on the site until Aug. 8, 2032.
Mary Lee Jane Rummel told board members she and her husband, Herman, would sell their building in the 400 block of East Main Street. They’ve been located in Hagerstown since 1997 and are transitioning away from selling vehicles. Rummel said the home-based business would enable them to continue serving customers who have grown to rely on the Rummels for vehicles.
A small mini-barn that matches the farm buildings will house the lot’s office. Rummel said the building and cars on the 28-acre site would not be a nuisance or look bad.
Two neighbors attended the BZA meeting to ask questions about the setup and lighting. Both were satisfied, and neither objected to the business.
In another decision, BZA members approved a mobile home as a temporary second dwelling at 4472 New Garden Road southeast of Williamsburg. Jeffrey and Tammy Capps plan to move into the mobile home, and their daughter, April Jones, will move into the house.
Jones will help care for the 5-acre property. She said the arrangement was important for the future as her parents age and lose mobility.
