Shirley Lakes was born April 28, 1948 in Bath, Indiana and lived a loving life until passing peacefully on January 28, 2024 in Connersville, Indiana. In celebrating Shirley, we remember a life well-lived, marked by love, kindness, and laughter.
Most of her youth was spent in Liberty, Indiana with her parents, Walter and Lillie Moore. At the age of 16, Shirley was fortunate to meet the love of her life, Jack Lakes. They embarked on a life-long journey when they wed on August 20, 1965 and spent over 59 years by each other’s side, always making each other laugh. Shirley was a loving mother to two sons, Jeff (Beth) Lakes and Troy Lakes, and she cherished time with her grandchildren, Emily, Mitchell, Conner, Hunter, and Madison. Shirley was also beloved by her two lifelong friends, Cindy Bowling and Carol Lancaster.
Known for her kindness, Shirley left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. She impacted numerous lives during her 29-year tenure as a reading aide at Fayette Central School. She enjoyed spending mornings with Jack at Brian’s Bistro, where they found camaraderie and support with their many friends. She also created lasting memories with family on trips to Brown County, General Butler, Kentucky, Shipshewana, and beyond. Shirley found great pleasure in music (especially Neil Sedaka), watching movies, crosswords, and reading.
A trusted spouse, a nurturing mother, a doting grandmother, a cherished friend, and a compassionate neighbor— she wore these roles with grace. No one could speak ill of Shirley, a testament to the love and goodness she spread throughout her life.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Walter and Lillie Moore, mother Rosalie Moore, and siblings Walter Moore Jr., Virgle Moore, Dale Long, Harold Frame, and Kathy Havens. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her husband, two sons, daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Mildred Allen, James Moore, Mary Jane Lantz, Jane Darden, and Gary Moore. She will be remembered through years of wonderful memories held dear by her family and community.
Friends and family may visit from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home. Pastor Jim Orr and Eric Hopkins will officiate.
