Cambridge City officials are gathering letters of support from the public by Oct. 25 as they apply for a grant to provide an outdoor performance venue.
The venue and gathering space would be built behind the town’s fire station on West Maple Street, adjacent to Creitz Park. Top priorities include the performance stage, a dance surface and an adult gathering space with lights and a fire pit.
Additional proposed components that would depend on available funds include a spray plaza, concessions building, restrooms, a game area and multiuse trail.
Some funding is coming from the town and county’s Hoosier Enduring Legacy Program dollars, along with SugarCreek and the tourism bureau, but residents and businesses can send letters to help the town increase its chances of qualifying for additional matching funds through a state Community Block Development Grant.
Town officials say the concerts that have taken place at the temporary stage on the site in the past two years have led to stronger community connections, provided a place to gather in a relaxing and entertaining environment and drew visitors who spent money in the town. Having a formalized venue also could bring other types of performances to the community, they suggest.
