George N. Schmid, 85, of Richmond, passed away on February 13, 2023, at Reid Hospital. He was born June 1, 1937, in St. Gallen, Switzerland to Emil and Erna Schmid and lived in Richmond for the past 50 years.
George was in the United States Air Force, stationed at Ft. MacDill during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He earned his MBA from Ball State University. He held several jobs over his lifetime but was most proud of his volunteer work, including the United Way and Richmond Civic Theater. He served in multiple capacities at the theater and even won the Norbert Silbiger award. Also, he was a nationally-ranked duplicate bridge player.
He is survived by his wife Donna, his three children Debbie (Mike) Weber of Indianapolis, Nick (Kathleen) Schmid of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Peggy (Steve) Gawron of Plainfield, IL; seven grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew, Carleen, William, Jacob, Ian, and Sophia; one sister Carol (Jean Jacques) vonWattenwyl of Switzerland, and three nieces and one nephew. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mary.
A celebration of life will be from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Richmond Civic Theater and will include a program with remembrances presented by friends and family.
