Hayes Arboretum has received $453,000 from a late local man’s estate.

John Turner-Grey, described as a talented floral designer, died at age 73 in 2023.

“John’s love and passion for plants, especially his ability to design with these natural elements, can serve as an inspiration for us all to better connect with the natural world around us,” said Steve Hayes Jr.,  the arboretum’s executive director, in a news release. “I am fortunate to have met and shared time, although too brief, with John. His gift of support to the Arboretum will be appreciated by visitors for years to come.”

Turner-Grey often visited the Richmond arboretum as a child with his mother and more recently during Petal & Stem Garden Club meetings, in which he was an active member and presenter.

Naming recognition will be given to the Annex classroom building, a space utilized by the garden club. In addition, the donation will go toward supporting arboretum operations and in creating a healing space on the property.

Hayes Arboretum, a local nonprofit, has connected area residents with nature for more than 60 years.

With 330 acres of forest, wetlands and prairies, the arboretum is open free to the public. Visitors can hike the 16 miles of trail, explore the Nature Center and drive through the property.
