30 to compete in 4-H royalty contests

Six young women are seeking the opportunity to be Wayne County 4-H Fair queen, and 24 younger girls are seeking titles as well.

Their competition begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 13, in Centerville Senior High School’s auditorium, 507 Willow Grove Road, Centerville. Admission is $5 for ages 6 and older.

Queen contestants must be between ages 16 and 21. They’ll be judged on public speaking, conversational ability, poise and personality.

Divisions will include professional wear, private interviews, evening gown, impromptu and prepared speech. The private interviews are worth 45 points. Professional wear and evening gown can earn a maximum of 20 points each. Prepared speech is worth 15 points and impromptu speaking can earn 10.

One new development is that the contestants will vote to select Miss Congeniality. She could also be the queen or the first or second alternate.

The winner will be highly encouraged to enter the state queen contest in January.

Younger students also have an opportunity to take part this weekend. The local contest also includes eight teens, six preteens and 10 juniors who want to serve at the fair, which takes place June 20-27.

Participants represent nearly every community across the county and a few neighboring communities. Contestants may live in adjoining Indiana counties if a majority of their activities are in Wayne County.
