The Little League state tournament field had been narrowed to four teams after play ended on Sunday, July 28.
In games played on Friday, July 26, Munster defeated Concord 14-1 in the tournament opener. Jasper and New Albany, two teams with outstanding defense, went an extra inning before Jasper eventually won by the score of 2-1 and Brownsburg shut out Broad Ripple 12-0. In the nightcap, Georgetown, a team from the northeast side of Ft. Wayne, overpowered local fan favorite New Castle by the score of 13-5.
In the opening game on Saturday, July 27, Jasper quieted the normally high-octane offense of Munster, defeating them 7-0, to remain in the winner’s bracket. New Albany overcame an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Concord 9-6 in an elimination game. The leadoff hitter for Brownsburg opened the game with a triple and the Bulldogs never looked back, overpowering Georgetown 20-2. In the last game of the day, New Castle kept their title hopes alive by defeating Broad Ripple 12-2.
In games played on Sunday, July 29, New Albany beat Munster 10-6 in an elimination game and Georgetown eliminated New Castle 12-8.
Details from the semi-final games, which were played on Monday July 29, featuring Jasper versus New Albany and Brownsburg versus Georgetown, were not available as of press time. Scores from those games, as well as the July 30 championship game between the semi-final game winners, will be reported in the August 7 Western Wayne News.
