An Economy man’s second attempt before the Wayne County Board of Zoning Appeals turned out in his favor July 10.
Abner King received a variance of use to operate a welding and fabricating business to repair agricultural equipment from a detached garage at his Manning Road residence. King previously requested the variance during March’s BZA meeting; however, at that time, he included powder coating in his request, which was denied. The powder-coating aspect was not included this time.
King said farmers approach him about repairing their equipment, but without a variance, he’s had to decline.
Neighbor Steve Baker, who owns Lynn Tool Co., opposed the BZA granting the variance. Baker said King’s shop is not safe and that he would hear and smell a gas generator King uses for power. The shop will disturb the peace and quiet Baker enjoys at his home, he said.
Despite the opposition, BZA members unanimously voted to grant King’s variance.
Before that discussion, BZA members unanimously granted Troy and Amanda Scholl a variance of use to put an accessory structure that extends past the front of their Wilkinson Road home in Dalton Township.
The Scholls plan a 30-foot-by-32-foot building that will look similar to their home. Troy Scholl said the couple needs the extra storage for a tractor he’s purchasing, their lawn mower and other items that now occupy garage space.
The building, which will be on the southwest side of the house, will extend past the house’s front because that’s the only possible location to place it. The Scholls’ well and trees are on the north side and the septic system is on the south side.
