Wayne County’s Night to Shine prom needs volunteers to bring joy to area teens and adults with disabilities.
The free prom takes place from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at First English Lutheran Church, 2727 E. Main St., Richmond.
The local Night to Shine is open to 125 participants ages 14 and older who dress in their finest outfits. At press time, six guest spots were available through registration online.
Along with dancing, the event includes a red-carpet entrance, hair and makeup stations, limousine rides, karaoke, gifts, dinner, a sensory room, a respite room for parents and caregivers, and a crowning ceremony where all guests are honored as kings or queens.
Each participant is paired with a buddy volunteer who is 16 or older.
Organizers now need 39 volunteer buddies and four parking attendants.
Prospective volunteers also asked to register soon at wwn.to/ntsvol26. The national organization says background checks will be conducted.
Attending a volunteer orientation session from 4-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the church is encouraged.
This is the ninth year that First English has hosted the “prom experience centered on God’s love.”
More than 100,000 people with disabilities typically attend the annual event around the world with help from 200,000 volunteers.
As of press time, the next closest Night to Shine location is the Radiant Lighthouse in Greenville, Ohio, but additional churches can still register as event hosts.
This year, a “Night to Shine: Celebrate at Home” virtual option is being offered at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. Participants can join that event for several reasons, such as local sites being at capacity, or needing a less stimulating environment or a smaller setting for medical reasons.
The prom started nationally in 2014 as a project of the Tim Tebow Foundation.
