Tri-Eastern Conference champion Union County added more hardware to its trophy case on Thursday, June 4, when it won the golf sectional.

Richmond freshman Wyatt Carter was the medalist, posting a score of 72. 

The Patriots, playing on their home course, Liberty Country Club, posted a score of 328, five strokes better than Richmond and Franklin County. Richmond was awarded second place using its fifth golfer’s score to break the tie.

The top three teams advanced to the regional. Hagerstown fell one shot short, placing fourth with a score of 334. 

The top three individuals who were not on one of the top three teams — Noah Searcy from Hagerstown, Trey Hughes from Connersville and Boston Beatty from Centerville — also advanced to the regional as individuals. Searcy and Hughes each posted scores of 80; Beatty shot 81.

It was the first sectional championship in golf for Union County since 1989. 

The regional will be played on Thursday, June 11, at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville, Indiana.
