The Northeastern volleyball team traveled to Morristown on Saturday, Oct. 25, for the regional championship against the Triton Central Tigers. The Tigers, members of the Hoosier Legends Conference, played aggressively to sweep the Knights 3-0.

The Tigers led wire-to-wire in the first set behind 10 kills, including five consecutively, from 5-foot-10 Lilly May to take a 25-18 win. The Knights led 2-1, 3-2, 4-2 and 4-3 in the second set before the Tigers tied the set at 4-4 and took the lead at 5-4. The Knights tied the score for the last time at 5-5 before the Tigers slowly pulled away. The Tigers ended the set on a 20-5 run to win 25-10.

The Knights opened the third set with a 1-0 lead, but it turned out to be the only lead they would enjoy. The Tigers eventually pulled away to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Northeastern prepares to receive a Triton Central serve during the teams’ regional match at Morristown.

Multiple Triton Central teams have taken trips to the regional round, but this was its first regional volleyball championship.

Northeastern head coach Anne Wissel reflected on the match and the season. “Triton Central is really good,” Wissel said. “I saw some good things out of our team today, but Triton Central was the aggressor and we did not adjust very well. We have had a good season and we will only lose one senior, so if the kids work hard, we could be back next season. The one senior we lose will be hard to replace. Ady Kircher’s primary sport is basketball, but she told me at our first practice this year that she would do whatever I asked of her to help the team win and she kept her word. She is an exceptional athlete and person.”

Individual statistics were not available for either team.
