A bridge has reopened on a well-traveled rural highway, and those driving near or on Interstate 70 on Richmond’s northwest side are seeing a few traffic changes.
I-70 updates
Traffic is shifting at U.S. 35, and drivers are using a new roundabout in a temporary configuration.
One Williamsburg Pike ramp is open again while another Williamsburg Pike ramp is closing temporarily.
Indiana Department of Transportation announced the northbound Williamsburg Pike ramp to westbound I-70 was reopening last week.
During the closure, the flyover ramp from Williamsburg Pike to westbound I-70 was demolished, and crews continued building the roundabouts at the U.S. 35 interchange.
Drivers will also notice a traffic shift at the Williamsburg Pike interchange. Southbound traffic at the U.S. 35 interchange will use a portion of the new roundabout in temporary configuration.
Meanwhile, the ramp from northbound Williamsburg Pike to eastbound I-70 closed Sept. 16 and will reopen in mid-November. A signed detour is in place.
During the closure, crews will build the connections for the final roundabout configuration at the U.S. 35 interchange.
Roundabouts have been proven to improve safety and traffic flow, INDOT says. Removing the loop ramps will eliminate the weaving movements from entrance and exit ramps.
U.S. 35 bridge
Wayne County’s U.S. 35 bridge over the Whitewater River is now open near Indiana 1 in rural Economy.
The bridge closed in February for a bridge deck replacement project. The new bridge deck is expected to extend the service life of the bridge by 75 years.
Indiana 3 update
Nearby, INDOT has announced a traffic pattern shift on Indiana 3 in New Castle.
Around Sept. 15, all drivers were to be on new pavement on the east side of Indiana 3 between Trojan Lane and Sherry Lynn Drive.
One lane will be open for northbound and southbound traffic through the end of November, weather permitting.
