The Hagerstown volleyball team hosted Randolph Southern on Thursday, Aug. 27, with a plan to recognize one of their own. Senior outside hitter Raleigh Doerstler entered the match only needing seven kills to reach the 1,000-kill mark for her career. With her teammates setting her up, Doerstler delivered five quick kills to lead her team to a 9-1 lead.
From that point, Doerstler was content to pass to others before collecting her seventh kill in the second set to a standing ovation from the large crowd. The Rebels were overwhelmed in the match, scoring fewer than 10 points in each set.
Doerstler, a four-year starter, said she didn’t set out thinking about achieving this milestone.
“As a freshman the number 1,000 was not on my mind.” Doerstler said. “I was just taking it day by day and trying to improve. I think this team has a lot of potential. We have the right coach, we have the right players. Continuing to win as a team is the most important thing now.”
Hagerstown head coach Brian Dale called Raleigh “a special player and a special person.”
“It is an honor to coach her,” he said.
