The 2A eighth-ranked Tigers, who entered the game riding an 11-game conference regular season winning streak over two seasons, pushed their streak to 12 games with an 8-0 victory over Winchester in an important conference win on April 23.
The Falcons sent Huntington commit Landen Porfidio to the mound to face the Tigers; the Tigers countered with hard-throwing sophomore Kaden Hall.
The Tigers scratched out a run in the top of the first inning. Jaxon Hale drew a walk to open the game and later scored on a Jack Rector RBI single. The Falcons had their best opportunity to score in the bottom of the first. Porfidio beat out an infield single and moved to second when Aiden Weatherhead drew a walk.
With two on and no one out, Hall went to work. A pop-up to the catcher, a strikeout and a ground out to third ended the threat. The Falcons did not have another base runner until Tre West singled in the bottom of the fourth.
The Tigers added a single run in the top of third inning and three more in the top of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The Tigers scored two more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh to make the score 8-0. When Hall left the game he had only surrendered three hits, no runs and struck out eight. Nolan Cheeseman came on to pitch the seventh inning and struck out two more to nail down the save.
Hall, Nick Tinkle and Graham Vinson each collected two hits for Hagerstown. No Falcon had more than one hit.
Hagerstown head coach Jay Hale was pleased with the win. “We played well and beat a good team tonight,” Hale said. “We are still in a position to control our own destiny in the conference race, and that is all any team can ask for.”
Falcon head coach Ken Hendrickson gave credit to Hagerstown.
“They are good and they played well,” he said. “But like I told the kids after the game. They just got beat by a team that they can’t allow to score eight runs and expect to beat. We are better than what we showed tonight. This game will be an additional incentive for us when the sectional rolls around.”
