When the Centerville Bulldogs hosted Hagerstown in a nonconference game on Craig Field on Friday, Aug. 28, they knew they would have to try to contain Tiger quarterback Graham Vinson, but they could not have anticipated the impact Tiger wide receiver Fletcher Callahan would have on the outcome of the game.
The Bulldogs struck first when Jace Hollendonner scored on a 3-yard run at the 8:22 mark. Gage Logan added the PAT kick to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. The Tigers answered at the 6:59 mark on a 9-yard run from Graham Vinson. The PAT kick was wide, leaving the Tigers trailing 7-6.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with four minutes remaining in the quarter when Hollendonner connected with Brylan Riggs on a 38-yard TD pass. Logan’s PAT extended the lead to 14-6.
The Tigers scored with 4:39 remaining in the first half on a 10-yard TD pass from Vinson to Fletcher Callahan to cut their deficit to 14-12, but the Tigers’ two-points conversion attempt failed. Bo Shadle scored on a 3-yard run with 38 seconds remaining in the first half and Logan added the PAT to give the Bulldogs a 21-12 half time lead.
Vinson broke through the line for a 75-yard touchdown run with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter, pulling the Tigers to within two points at 21-19.
The Tigers controlled the fourth quarter to complete their comeback. The Bulldogs opened the fourth quarter with a first and goal at the 7-yard line but the Tigers made a goal-line stand to turn them over on downs. The Bulldogs were knocking on the door again moments later with a first and 10 from the 11-yard line.
The Tiger defense stopped them short again when Callahan intercepted a pass in the end zone on fourth down with 3:30 remaining in the game. The Tigers started a march down field.
The big play of the drive was a 33-yard pass to Nick Tinkle, who made a circus catch at the 18-yard line. Two plays later, Vinson threw a TD pass to Callahan to give the Tigers a 25-21 lead with 1:18 remaining.
Shadle quickly moved the Bulldogs down field before Callahan intercepted him to preserve the Tiger win.
The Bulldogs built a 21-12 halftime lead, but the Tigers came back to outscore them 13-0 in the second half to pull out a 25-21 victory.
The Bulldogs’ concern about defending Vinson was legitimate. Vinson completed 10 of 13 passing attempts for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Vinson also gained 135 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard scrambling touchdown in the third quarter that changed the game’s momentum.
Callahan, known as Fletch to his teammates, was the X-factor. The shortest player on either roster, he caught two downtown passes and twice intercepted Bulldog passes in the end zone to kill Centerville scoring drives that were potential game winners.
Fletch said the Tigers had a score to settle with the Bulldogs. “When we were freshmen they put a beating on us over here,” Fletcher said, referring to a 53-7 loss. “We never forgot that. Tonight we played as a team, everybody did their job and we were able to celebrate a win on their field.”
Tiger head coach Scott Snodgrass called the Bulldogs a “tough team.” “Their offensive and defensive line gave us fits all night,” Snodgrass said. “When Jace (Hollendonner) left the game, Bo Shadle came in and played well. He threw some pretty solid passes and ran the ball hard. I am really proud of our two defensive stops at the goal line.”
Centerville head coach Ryan Cole described Bo Shadle as a dog. “When Jace (Hollendonner) had to leave the game we were confident that Shadle would play well. He is somebody who is a leader in our locker room,” Cole said. “We are just hurting for our guys who got injured tonight. We did a good job overcoming that adversity. We wanted to establish the run and Hunter Sonntag did a great job of that. On two drives late in the game we were just short of punching the ball into the end zone to put the game away and we couldn’t do it. Between the two picks from Callahan and the 75–yard run for Graham (Vinson), they made the plays they needed to win. We will be back.”

Knights even record with ECC win at Shenandoah
The Northeastern Knights jumped out to an early lead and overcame a 245-yard rushing, three-touchdown night, from Raider senior Cash Cowley to even their record in Eastern Crossroads Conference with a 40-27 road win over Shenandoah.

Eaton continues mastery over Red Devils
In a game originally scheduled to be played on Lyboult Field and later moved to the Eaton Athletic Complex, the Ohio small-school powerhouse Eagles handed the Red Devils a 39-8 loss in a game played on Friday, Aug. 28. It was the fourth time in the four meetings between the two schools that the Eagles have prevailed.
