Some Richmond and Wayne County snow plows will look different when you see them plowing roads this winter.
You might see one telling you to “Think Spring,” with a vibrant sun. Or, one with a viper. Or, one with snowmen.
A project allowed schoolchildren from Richmond Community Schools, Centerville-Abington schools and Western Wayne schools to paint the plow blades, providing a variety of decorations. Plows were displayed last week at the Richmond Municipal Building along North Third Street.

Cathy Williams, a Wayne County Council member, saw a television news story a few years ago about students painting plow blades, thinking it was a great idea. This year, with help from Bridget Hazelbaker at RCS, the idea came to fruition.
“I’m sure the kids that participate will remember this for a very long time,” Williams said in an email. “Hopefully, the kids doing the project will see their finished art work, plowing snow for us this winter. I think it will be lots of fun not just for the kids, but the adults who see them as well.”
Students at Richmond High School, Hibberd Program Building, Test Intermediate, Dennis Middle and Charles, Crestdale, Fairview, Starr, Vaile and Westview elementaries in Richmond; Centerville-Abington and Rose Hamilton elementaries in Centerville; and Lincoln Middle School in Western Wayne painted plows from the Richmond Street Department and Wayne County Highway Department.
Supplies for the project were donated, including paint from Painter’s Supply in Cambridge City and plastic sheets to catch paint drippings from Primex Plastics in Richmond.
