Monica Koechlein, who has served as executive director of Richmond Symphony Orchestra for nearly 13 years, is stepping down.

RSO’s board announced Koechlein’s late November departure in a Sept. 28 news release. Koechlein will continue overseeing logistics for two upcoming concerts.

“The Family Adventure” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, is designed especially for families. It has an interactive narrated “whodunit” to introduce every section of the orchestra. High school students in the Orchestra Within an Orchestra program also will perform at Civic Hall Performing Arts Center in Richmond.

Those selected were Chloe Santiago and Luz Soto, violin; Chrissie Santiago, bass; Kyleigh Atwell, flute; Zoey Samms, alto sax; Brady Newton, trumpet; Aiden Andreson and Jacob Brandenstein, trombone; and Aiden Merkamp, tuba.

The 7 p.m. Nov. 21 concert, featuring music by Nielsen, Bruch and Shostakovich, will be Koechlein’s final day of work. She announced on social media that the decision was entirely hers, and she was ready for a new life chapter as her daughter departed for college.

The board’s statement noted Koechlein’s dedication, vision and a deep commitment to the community.

“During her tenure, she has broadened the organization’s reach through concerts, community outreach, and educational programs,” the statement read. “Notably, her leadership has played a significant role in positioning the symphony for long-term sustainability. We are deeply grateful for her service and the lasting impact of her many contributions.”
