The Richmond boys bowling team won the New Castle regional held on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Rose City Bowl.

Richmond led qualifying by 88 pins over Whiteland with a 12-game Baker score of 2,422. In Baker matches, each team has five players bowling two frames each. The scores for each match are added together for a final score.

In the first match of the finals, Warren Central defeated Greenwood, then Whiteland took down Warren Central to set up the two Baker game finals.  Warren Central took an early lead, starting with three strikes, before Richmond started with five of the first six strikes to take the lead and never looked back, winning the first game 244-175.

The second game was close throughout, with Whiteland throwing three strikes in the 10th frame to win 225-215, but the match was decided prior to the final frame with RHS taking the title 459-400.

This is Richmond’s fourth regional title since 2016.

The day started with singles competition, including three qualifying games with the top 13 bowlers advancing to the Richmond semi-state Saturday, Jan. 31. RHS had five bowlers of the 33 to start the day.

Senior Brycen Whited took 12th (524) and teammate Jacob Gettinger (junior) took the final advancement spot with a 523. The other Richmond scores were sophomores Alex Padron (519) and Jorge Bermea (477), and freshman Bryden King (446).
