The Richmond football team hosted longtime rival Connersville on Friday, Aug. 22, to open regular-season play. The Devils scored first when Jai Allen pulled in a 20-yard TD pass and Ryder Morken added the PAT to make the score 7-0.
The Spartans responded with 21 second quarter points to take a 21-7 halftime lead.
The Spartans pushed their advantage to 28-7 with a short TD run in the third period. The Spartans scored in the fourth period before Ian Cox electrified the crowd by returning the kickoff 83 yards for a score. The RHS PAT cut their deficit to 35-15 before the Spartans scored again in the final period to make the final score 42-15, extending their current win streak over the Red Devils to six consecutive meetings.
The Spartans gained 171 yards rushing while the Devils had a net gain of 35 yards rushing. Logan Alexander led the Devils with 30 yards on 13 carries.
Thomas Stargell completed eight of 16 pass attempts for 133 yards and a touchdown. Mason Lamb caught 2 passes for 52 yards, Alexander caught three passes for 31 yards. Jai Allen, Maurice Hibbler and Camden Reed were each credited with two tackles.
The Red Devils will travel to Eaton, Ohio, on Friday, Aug. 29, to face the Eagles.
